Ramadan Debate
The weekend was hectic. SPEAK, our debate team, went to compete in the Multimedia University Ramadan IV Debate Tournament and it’s our first experience with the BP style (British Parliamentary). It’s more technical than the Asian style we went through at Taylor’s College last month. It was so much harder! A whole new experience it was.
The difference between BP and Asian debate is that BP has 4 teams going against each other in every match while in Asian, there’s only two teams in every match.….and BP has whole lot of messy protocols I would not like to bore you with.
Met lots of familiar faces from the previous tournament and some new ones. We sent three teams. I was in one of them. Two of our best speakers couldn’t make it so I had to be thrown in the bag with a new member as my partner.
In short, my team lost round one (4th), came in 3rd on round two, and won in round three. As for round four, we never knew what placing we got as it was a silent round.
None of our teams went into the quarter finals. There were obviously too many good teams. One of our adjudicators however did manage to get chosen up until the finals. That at least we can be proud of LOL.
We, as usual, stayed all through the matches after that. Every single match from the quarters, semis, and especially the finals were damn entertaining. These were experienced debaters I was watching and hope someday, I’ll be able to be in their level.
Only the grand winner was announced which was a team from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM 2) though from unofficial sources, IIUM 1, their other team got second and Multimedia University Melaka got 3rd.
The weekend was great even though I was under prepared for it. I have no excuses, I sucked pretty well and you know what? I’m happy with it!
