Star Trek: The Review
At first I didn’t want to watch this. The franchise, previously, bored me to death with all its space jargons. Despite that, out of the recommendation of a friend who has taste for movies as good as mine, I went to have a look at it anyway.
JJ Abrams Star Trek sold me in its first 30 minutes. The movie sets itself apart from all the crappy action blockbusters you see shelving out of studios nowadays. This is a revived classic with an exciting plot, great characters and solid action. All the tension, humour, and thrill are mixed harmoniously well in this 126 minutes feature. I have not seen a space sci-fi movie this good since Serenity.
I think what glued audiences to their seat was the conflict and later, friendship between Spock and Kirk. Something that kept me captivated till the end.
The film however does have its cheese. Eric Bana portrayed a terrible villain. He lacked something important: personality! Kirk, despite being the main character, is overshadowed by Spock’s immense quality. Either that, or they chose the wrong actor to play the part. Chris Pine should’ve just stick to chick-flicks – where he belongs.
Old fans of the franchise would be disappointed because this film is mainstreamed and required very little thinking. But the franchise needs reviving after the ridiculous attempt of Nemesis so you nerds would just have to let this go or let your Gene Roddenberry fantasy die from the silver screen. I’m pretty sure that the commercial and critical success of this movie will generate, to name a few: fan films, TV series, video games, merchandises and maybe a theme park no?
Star trek is definitely one of this year’s best movies and gets my thumbs up. A 4 out of 5.
