Push is Mush
like mashed potatoes!
This Push movie review has been in draft for over two months now and today, I watched it again to confirm my verdict and as you can read from the post headline – not good! This is the most disappointing movie in my 2009 anticipated movie list. I was really looking forward to see it since October last year.
Anyway, on to the review. There’s a great story behind Push. wait, wait – good plot but most of it isn’t in the film! It’s either the producers planned this one as a mundane prologue of another sick trilogy or they just have no brains! The way I put it, they wanted to mainstream the film at the same time adding a lot of mystery to it which of course, required a little brain power. Tsk tsk tsk..risky. Not every filmmaker can do this and certainly not the ones who made Push.
Dakota Fanning played her role very well, excellent if not. Her character here is very complex and mysterious, adding to the suspense. She knows something but acts the opposite. Such scene that uncover some of her skin:
face to face with the Division chief. They didn’t try to kill each other but instead had an ‘understanding’. Something her comrades don’t know, even until the credits started rolling.
As for the other characters, Chris Evans played a nice hero. Nice, as in not well, as in your run-of-the-mill Nicholas Cage hopping around Bangkok doing god knows what. Okay, maybe that was too much praise – how about half of that! Camilla Belle – I can only suggest one thing: Rassies!
Push could’ve been better, way better if it’s not because of the messy direction and huge amounts of unnecessary scenes which crammed most of it’s 111 minute run. A great plot isn’t all it takes to make a great movie and the only way Push can make up to itself is a well planned sequel.
